I was able to score a 5 on my AP Art Portfolio. This is the highest score achievable, and it is incredible to see how my work paid off! I worked on this portfolio throughout both semesters of my junior year in high school, and had a lot of time to make revisions and decisions based on feedback from my peers. There is also a written portion, although all written aspects of the portfolio face extremelty tight character limitations. The entire process is documented.
The AP 2D Art and Design Portfolio Includes:
2 written responses
15 images (Sustained Investigation) that follow the chosen question AND include processes and evidence of revision
5 Selected Works (best pieces ever created; can be from anything)
A large part of AP Art is being able to accurately explain your artwork with words, and show how it is all connected under one larger question. Luckily for me, I love diving into all of that, so I will provide my complete documented processes here- just as I did with my submitted Collegeboard portfolio.
In the context of AP Art, a "sustained investigation" refers to the overarching question that ties all of your works together. This question can evolve over time with you art, and is meant to demonstrate growth throughout your investigation. My sustained investigation was this: How does self-perception change due to outside influences?
WRITTEN PORTION:
Q: Identify the inquiry that guided your sustained investigation.
A: My question settled on: How does self-perception change due to outside influences? My art breaks down my past, who I want to become, the influence of outside forces, and methods of self-expression. I used symbolism, color, and lighting to portray emotions using bright colors to show intensity, duller colors to represent faded memories, and reoccurring symbols to represent transformation. All these elements create a distorted, dreamlike world that I used to portray my experiences. These works show internal and external struggles and explore themes of growth, isolation, identity, and freedom.
Q: Describe ways your sustained investigation developed through practice, experimentation, and revision.
A: My art focused on knowing myself through my past, seen in images 1-2. Muted colors and the mirror were used to show a link to my past and memories. I then shifted toward a symbolic approach, using wings and butterflies to explore freedom and rebirth in images 3-6, and using space and jarring visuals in images 7-8 to represent daydreaming as a way of escape. My art shifted to the influence of external factors on me in images 9-15. My favorite artwork (SI 14-15), uses photos from concerts, and lyrics from the artists, to create a piece that shows the power of music as an extension of myself.

*The AP 2D Art and Design Portfolio also consists of smaller written portions attached to each of the Sustained Investigation and Selected Works images. These responses are limited to 100 characters or less, and were not included on this website. In my case, they were used to further elaborate on the meaning behind each of these pieces, and provide details on the materials that were used to create them. I think my intentions behind each piece can be made clear here by the longer written responses, and even if not, I think my art is very intersting to interpret in varying ways.
